Annapolis’ Flynn named overall champion of NOOD

Annapolis native Terry Flynn, champion of the J/22 class, was declared overall winner of the National Offshore One-Design Series on the Chesapeake Bay in the conclusion of the three-day regatta on Sunday. Arnold resident Geoff Becker led from start to finish in winning the J/70 class. Severna Park skipper John White won three races and placed second in two others to win the J/80 class. Other local champions included Sherwood Forest resident Timothy Bloomfield (White Cap) in Cal 25; Annapolis resident Bill Sweeters (Rush) in the PHRF 50-75 division; and Annapolis Yacht Club members Jim Konigsberg (Inigo) in J/105, brothers-in-law Bob Rutsch and Mike Costello (Bebop) in J/30 and Martin Roesch (Velocity) of Ellicott City in J/111. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Maryland senior linebacker Abner Logan, a former four-star recruit in former coach Randy Edsall’s best recruiting class, announced his intent to transfer in an Instagram post this weekend. Logan was suspended for violating team rules in spring 2014 and then was placed on disciplina­ry probation. He returned in October 2014 and played in the final seven games of the season. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first week of practice last August. MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: No. 7 Syracuse (10-4) outscored No. 14 Duke (10-7) 5-0 after a three-hour weather delay in Kennesaw, Ga., to earn a 14-8 victory and capture its second straight Atlantic Coast Conference title. WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Aly Messinger’s overtime goal lifted No. 3 North Carolina (16-2) to a15-14 win over No. 5 Syracuse (16-5) in the ACC championsh­ip in Blacksburg, Va. … Michaela Michael scored a hat trick as No. 4 Southern California (19-0) earned an 8-5 win over host No. 8 Stanford (14-4) to win the program’s first Mountain Pacific Sports League title. … Kaitlyn Montalbano scored four goals and Natalie Sulmonte added a hat trick to lead No. 19 Towson to a 13-10 over visiting Connecticu­t (12-4). The No. 2 seed Tigers will face No. 3 seed Elon at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the CAA semifinals at Drexel. … Taylor Carhart (Manchester Valley) had two goals and one assist but Mount St. Mary’s (5-11, 3-3 Northeast Conference) fell 8-6 to host Robert Morris (9-7, 5-2). COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Sophomore catcher-third baseman Holiday Cahill set school records with three home runs and seven RBIs to help host Towson (33-15, 9-8 CAA) earn a 9-3 win over Delaware (29-19, 9-9). GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD: Annapolis High junior Maria Coffin ran what is believed to be the fastest high school time in Maryland history in the 3,000-meter run this past weekend at the Penn Relays in Philadelph­ia. Coffin, the reigning 3,200-meter track and Class 4A cross country state champion, finished in 9 minutes, 48.41 seconds. Annapolis coach Brian Brown researched the record time and could find none faster. —
