Former Northeast football coach Bart Rader died Tuesday at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Del. Rader, who was 73, had cancer.
Rader was the football coach at Northeast for 14 years, compiling 60-79 record. He succeeded Harry Lentz as coach in 1983 and resigned in 1996, turning the program over to former player Steve Sweet.
Rader ran the Wing-T offense and emphasized a hard-hitting defense at Northeast, always one of the smallest schools in Anne Arundel County. He led the Eagles to a 7-3 record and the Class 3A-2A county championship in 1989.
“Bart was a good guy who always put competitive teams on the field,” said former Southern coach Russ Meyers, who went against Rader many times. “I thought Bart did a good job with the talent he had. Northeast always played hard and was well-prepared.”
Rader later served as an assistant at South River under Dave Summey, another former 3A-2A league rival. Bart Rader Richardson invited to U.S. U-17 soccer camp: Archbishop Curley junior Nick Richardson, a two-time All-Metro first-team defender, has been selected to participate in the under-17 U.S. men’s national team training camp, set to begin Tuesday at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
In addition to leading the Friars to nine shutouts, the center back also finished with four goals and six assists. Richardson, a three-year-starter at Curley, also plays for the Baltimore Celtic club team. Morris heading to West Virginia: South Carroll senior Kevin Morris has committed to West Virginia.
Morris, 6 feet 3, 165-pounds, the Carroll County Times Player of the Year in 2016, also was aggressively recruited by Belmont and American. He said he will attend West Virginia on an academic scholarship and major in mechanical engineering.
Cavaliers coach TimNovotnysaid Morris, 17, a two-year co-captain who moved from defender to midfielder as a junior, can have an immediate impact with Mountaineers.
“West Virginia is in need of a center back,” the coach said. “My assumption is that he will play right away.”
