State thoroughbr­ed groups present inaugural awards

The Maryland Horse Breeders Associatio­n, Maryland Thoroughbr­ed Horsemen’s Associatio­n and the Maryland Jockey Club held their first Renaissanc­e Awards on Monday recognizin­g excellence in thoroughbr­ed racing and breeding in 2017. The Renaissanc­e Awards were created to celebrate the resurgence of the racing and breeding industries in Maryland. More than 200 guests attended the event at the Sagamore Pendry in historic Fells Point. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will benefit local charities: Beyond the Wire, the Maryland Horse Industry Foundation and Maryland horse industry scholarshi­ps. Following is a list of award winners. NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER LEAGUE: The Washington Spirit acquired the Houston Dash’s natural fourth round pick in the 2019 NWSL college draft in exchange for forward Tiffany Weimer. Washington selected Weimer with the No. 20 overall pick in the NWSL dispersal draft Jan. 30. MAJOR ARENA SOCCER LEAGUE: Blast midfielder Tony Donatelli was named to the MASL Team of the Week. Donatelli had a goal and an assist in the Blast’s win over Milwaukee on Saturday, scoring the game-winner with eight seconds left. The Blast’s Adriano Dos Santos was named honorable mention. BASEBALL: The Milwaukee Brewers signed outfielder Quintin Berry, who played in 10 games for the Orioles in 2014. … The Long Island Ducks on the independen­t Atlantic League signed first baseman David Washington, who had six at-bats for the Orioles last season. MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Saturday’s 1 p.m. matchup between No. 8 Johns Hopkins and No. 12 Loyola Maryland at Ridley Athletic Complex will be the first college lacrosse game broadcast on Facebook Live. ... Maryland junior defenseman Curtis Corley was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. ... Nate Jones had a hat trick to lead No. 13 Army West Point (2-0) to a 14-5 victory over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology (0-3). WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Sam Apuzzo had a natural hat trick and finished with six goals and two assists to lead No. 4 Boston College (2-0) to a 20-2 win over visiting Holy Cross (0-1). — was being punished for rigorously enforcing its honor code.

Barry Bennell, a former English youth soccer coach who has previously received three jail sentences for offenses against children, was found guilty of fresh sex charges linked to 10 complainan­ts at Liverpool Crown Court. The latest case relates to abuse covering a period from 1979 to 1990 and was sparked by some former players waiving their right to anonymity to speak publicly in 2016.
