Dilfer signs one-year deal with Ravens as backup quarterback
MARCH 8, 2000: “I’m a team guy 100 percent,” Trent Dilfer says after signing a one-year, $1 million contract with the Ravens as a backup quarterback. Instead, Dilfer, 28, will take Baltimore to a Super Bowl title.
MARCH 4, 1989: In its men’s lacrosse opener, Johns Hopkins defeats No. 1 Syracuse, 14-13, at Homewood Field. The No. 2 Blue Jays get four goals, including the game-winner, from Matt Panetta and stellar defense from Dave Pietramala.
MARCH 9, 1981: In his first spring training with the Orioles, 20-year-old Cal Ripken Jr. singles twice and steals a base in the team’s first intrasquad game in Miami.
MARCH 8, 1972: A power outage at Bowie Race Course leaves the track dark for more than an hour. Some fans spend the time shooting craps by candlelight.
MARCH 10, 1966: The Orioles acquire journeyman catcher Camilo Carreon from the Cleveland Indians for minor league outfielder Lou Piniella and $20,000. Carreon hits .222 and retires at season’s end; Piniella plays 18 years in the majors and manages for 23 more, taking the Cincinnati Reds to a world championship in 1990.
MARCH 8, 1960: Jerry West leads No. 5 West Virginia past stubborn Navy, 94-86, in the first round of the NCAA East Regionals at Madison Square Garden in New York. West, a basketball All-American, finishes with 34 points, 15 rebounds and five assists. Jay Metzler (27 points, 15 rebounds) stars for the Midshipmen.
MARCH 7, 1953: Despite 15 points from Al Kaline, Southern’s basketball team loses, 63-52, to Mount Saint Joseph in the Maryland Scholastic Association championship game at Homewood. Jerry Komin leads the Gaels with 16 points, and Gene Nieberlein adds nine.
MARCH 10, 1928: Navy’s wrestling team, undefeated for nine years in dual meets, beats Syracuse, 6-0, in Annapolis. It’s the 54th consecutive win for coach Spike Webb’s Midshipmen, who get a 20-second TKO from heavyweight W.G. “Moon” Chapple, who breaks his opponent’s nose with his second punch. Later an admiral, Chapple is a hero in World War II.

MARCH 4, 1946: Baltimore-born George Nock, Morgan State running back whoplayed four years in the NFLand then became a sculptor. Nock’s statues of former Bears football coaches Eddie Hurt and Earl Banks grace the school’s campus.
