Blast stop Syracuse surge to win playoff opener, 7-6

The Blast held off a late Syracuse rally to defeat the Silver Knights, 7-6, in Game 1 of the Major Arena Soccer League Eastern Division final. Daniel Peruzzi and Vini Dantas each had two goals for the Blast. Bo Jelovac recorded two goals and one assist for Syracuse. The Blast built a 5-0 lead early in the second half and then had to hold on. Tony Donatelli, Jamie Thomas and Jonathan Greenfield each recorded an assist for Baltimore. Pat Healey had six blocks and goalkeeper Joey Kapinos made 14 saves for the Blast. The Blast host Game 2 of the best-of-five series Sunday at 5:05 p.m. at Towson’s SECUArena. If Syracuse wins Game2, a mini-game will be played Sunday to decide the division title. COLLEGE BASEBALL: Freshman Randy Bednar had three hits, including a solo homerun, but Maryland fell, 7-1, to visiting Delaware. —
