Downtown shooting leaves woman in stable condition
Police say morning incident linked to domestic dispute
A woman was shot in the face on Light Street outside a luxury apartment tower and popular gym in downtown Baltimore early Friday morning in what police said was a domestic dispute.
Officers responded just after 6 a.m. to the first block of Light Street. Police said a 22-year-old woman had been approached by a person who shot her in the face, then ran away.
The woman was taken to an area hospital and is in stable condition, police said. The shooting took place just outside the 10 Light Street apartment building and the Under Armour Performance Center at the corner of Redwood Street.
Police spokesman T.J. Smith said on Twitter the shooting was a targeted, domestic-related incident.
Part of the block, including the main entrance to the apartment complex, was cordoned off with police tape Friday morning, and there were bloodstains on the street and sidewalk outside.
Residents had to cross tape lines to exit the apartment building, and customers at the Starbucks in the building, at the corner of Light and Baltimore streets, stepped over wet blood to enter the coffee shop.
It’s been two years since the 10 Light Street building was redeveloped, transforming an Art Deco office building built in 1929 into luxury residences complete with amenities including the gym, a cafe, spa, dog parks and a pool.
The building reopened in 2016 with the Under Armour gym as a first-floor centerpiece that melds the building’s history — the gym is housed in a former bank — with fitness. The gym is operated by FX Fitness.
The Under Armour Performance Center opened at 5:30 a.m. Friday, shortly before the shooting. Kate Borlongan, assistant general manager for the gym, said the incident did not affect any staff or gym members.
She said the gym is committed to the safety of its facility and will place a renewed emphasis on security.
“The priority of safety is going to be something that is a big topic of discussion in future meetings in the company,” Borlongan said.
Gables Residential, the manager for the 10 Light Street apartments, could not be reached for comment Friday.
In an email to residents of the apartment tower, obtained by The Baltimore Sun, Gables detailed the incident and said it was working to increase security.
Drops of blood on open sidewalks stretched for more than a block down Baltimore Street to the Charles Center metro station, where police roped off another portion of the block containing a large pool of blood. The woman walked down the block after the shooting and was found in front of the metro station, a police spokeswoman said.
Police are investigating the shooting and are asking anyone with information to call them at 410-396-2221, or call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
