Late FG gives Brigade sole possession of first place

Mark Lewis kicked a 17-yard field goal with 1.6 seconds left to lift the Brigade (6-2) to a 59-56 win over the host Albany Empire (5-3) on Saturday night in a battle for sole possession of first place in the Arena Football League. Brigade quarterbac­k Randy Hippeard was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after passing for a season-high eight touchdowns. Wide receiver Brandon Thompkins totaled 159 yards and three touchdowns on a career-high and Brigade-record 17 receptions. Niko Amato (Maryland) made 12 of his 19 saves during the second and third quarters for the Bayhawks, who scored nine of the game’s final 14 goals after a rain delay of 1 hour, 40 minutes. MAJORLEAGU­ESOCCER: Nicolas Lodeiro ended a 362-minute Seattle scoreless drought in the 57th minute, and Magnus Wolff Eikrem headed in the winner in the 83rd as the Sounders (3-7-2) rallied to a 2-1 win over visiting D.C. NATIONAL PROFESSION­AL SOCCER LEAGUE: FC Baltimore earned a 1-1 draw with visiting Virginia Beach on Saturday. Sebastian Refi scored on a free kick in the 31st minute to give Virginia Beach the lead, but Nate Hall answered with a goal for Baltimore in the 62nd minute, ending the club’s 245-minute scoring drought. RUNNING: Adam Callaway, 36, of Towson won the Maryland Half Marathon on Saturday in Fulton in 1 hour, 23.14.4 seconds. The female winner of the race, which begins and ends in Maple Lawn and winds through Howard County, was Hannah Walter, 21 of Baltimore in1:30:26.8. Eric Schuler, 25, of Laurel won the 5-kilometer race in 18:53, and Courtney Waldhauser, 28, of Fallston was the women’s champion in 21:14. Jicheng Liu, 46, of Ellicott City was second in the half-marathon in1:27:11.6, followed by Walter, who was third overall. The second women’s finisher was Amy Haas of Athens, Ohio, who was 24th overall in 1:41:32.4. The race benefits the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehens­ive Cancer Center. GOLF: Matthew Barr and Ian Meyers of Fieldstone Club were the overall champions at the Golf Club at South River’s member-guest tournament.
