UM’s Carter leads East in All-America game

JUNE 22, 1975: Maryland running back Lou Carter (Arundel) rushes for one touchdown and passes for another as East beats West, 23-21, in the Coaches All-America College Football Game in 90-degree heat in Lubbock, Texas. Carter, named Most Valuable Player, is a third-round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders.
JUNE 20, 1970: “It’s gotta be one of my biggest kicks,” the Orioles’ Brooks Robinson says of his 2,000th hit, a three-run homerun in the fifth inning that defeats the Washington Senators, 5-4, before an announced 19,876 at Memorial Stadium.
JUNE 21, 1969: Larry Barbiere, star of Calvert Hall’s Maryland Scholastic Association swimming champions, is namedto the National Interscholastic All-America team. Barbiere, who placed fourth in the 1968 Olympics in the 100-meter backstroke, will go on to star for Indiana’s NCAA powerhouse.
JUNE 19, 1962: Adora’s Dream, a 3-yearold pacer, wins his 16th race in 18 starts, taking the $10,000 Laurel Invitational Cup at Laurel Raceway.
JUNE 22, 1954: Make it nine straight losses for the woebegone Orioles, who fall, 3-1, in 12 innings to the Boston Red Sox at Memorial Stadium. “Bullet” Bob Turley goes the distance for Baltimore, allowing six hits but walking11.
JUNE 17, 1950: The Maryland Jockey Clubdropsplansto close aging Pimlico Race Course and transfer its dates to Laurel Park. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt II, a member of the board of directors, says the MJC will “give the people of Baltimore what they want” and modernize Pimlico for $750,000.
JUNE 18, 1945: Pro golfers Byron Nelson and Jug McSpaden defeat a pair of soldiers in abest-ball exhibition at AberdeenProving Ground. The highlight is an eagle 3 on the 545-yard eighth hole by Nelson who, one month later, wins his second PGA championship.
JUNE 19, 1922: Lefty Grove pitches a five-hitter and strikes out 13 — two short of his International League record — as the first-place Orioles rout the Buffalo Bisons, 11-2, at Oriole Park. It’s their 45th win against 16 losses.
