Red Sox: Ace LHP Chris Sale went on the disabled list with left shoulder inflammation, meaning he will miss his scheduled start this week against the Yankees. Sale is leading the majors in strikeouts and tops the AL with a 2.04 ERA. Sale is 5-0 in his last six starts and hasn’t given up a run in his last three outings. LHP Brian Johnson will start Thursday’s game against the Yankees. RHP Brandon Workman was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Twins: RHP Trevor May was recalled from Triple-A Rochester after missing the 2017 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. May was 0-4 with a 4.00 ERA in four starts and nine relief appearances for the Red Wings, with 16 walks and 25 strikeouts. He was 13-17 with a 5.14 ERA with the Twins from 2014-16.
Nationals: SS Trea Turner apologized to his teammates for homophobic and racially insensitive tweets he sent several years ago. “It’s not when I said the things I said. It’s that I said them at all,” the 25-year-old Turner said. ... The team reinstated 3B Anthony Rendon from the family medical leave list.
Yankees: Masahiro Tanaka pitched six scoreless innings to extend his unbeaten streak to 13 starts in a 6-3 win over the Orioles. ... LHP J.A. Happ was sent home after contracting hand, foot and mouth disease.
Angels: Mike Trout hit his 30th home run in a 10-6 loss to the Rays, becoming just the second big leaguer to hit 30 home runs and steal 20 bases in a season three times before the age of 26.
Mariners: The team designated 2B Gordon Beckham for assignment and optioned 1B Daniel Vogelbach to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners also placed 3B Kyle Seager on paternity leave.
Athletics: RHP Daniel Gossett will undergo Tommy John surgery Wednesday, two days after opening day starter Kendall Graveman had a similar procedure. Gossett, winless in five starts this season, has been out since June 4 with a right elbow strain.
