Mystics fall to Lynx, 88-83, receive No. 3 seed, bye

Lindsay Whalen scored 10 points in the final regular-season home game of her career, Sylvia Fowles set the WNBA season record for rebounds and the Minnesota Lynx closed the season with a 88-83 victory over the visiting Washington Mystics on Sunday night. The No. 3 seed Mystics had their eight-game winning streak ended and their 22 regular-season wins tied a franchise best. Washington will have a bye through the first round of the playoffs to host the Lynx-Los Angeles Sparks winner in the second round Thursday night. MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER: Luciano Acosta scored early and Zoltan Stieber added a late goal to help D.C. United (7-9-6) win its third in a row, 2-0, over the 10-man New England Revolution (79-8) on Sunday night. HORSE RACING: Jeffrey Harryman of Baltimore finished with a bankroll balance of $2,214.50 to capture the fall session of the Maryland Jockey Club Champions Handicappi­ng Tournament held on Maryland Pride Day at Laurel Park. Harryman earned $2,790 in prize money and ended with a comfortabl­e margin over runner-up Sean Nolan of Alexandria. Harryman will compete in the BCBC be held Nov. 2-3 at Churchill Downs, while Nolan heads to the BIG ONE Sept. 22-23 at Laurel Park. Third place went to John Kousouris of Towson. LOCAL GOLF: Randy Sroka shot a tournament­record 134 to capture the men’s stroke play championsh­ip at The Golf Club at South River. Pam Cooling finished at 173 to claim the women’s stroke play title and Lee Weigt shot 150 to secure the senior stroke play championsh­ip. Shane D’Aprile (161) and Mark Charnock ( 177) were the men’s first and second flight winners, respective­ly. —
