Mariners: LHP Marco Gonzales was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained neck muscle. The Mariners announced the move during its off day Monday before starting a two-game series with the Padres. Gonzales was scheduled to start the second game of the series. He’s the second starter in the Mariners rotation currently on the disabled list, although lefty James Paxton is expected to return sometime during a fourgame series with the A’s this weekend. Outfielder Guillermo Heredia was recalled from Triple A to take Gonzales’ spot. Gonzales was one of Seattle’s top starters for the first four months of the season, but has been awful in August. He is 0-4 with a 10.35 ERA in his last four starts.

Blue Jays: After being ruled out for the season, Troy Tulowitzki said he intends to reclaim his role as the starting shortstop next year. “If someone’s better than me, I’ll pack my bags and go home,” said Tulowitzki, who had surgery in April to remove bone spurs from both heels. The oftinjured Tulowitzki has not played since July 2017, when he seriously injured his right ankle in a collision at first base. The five-time All-Star has missed at least 30 games in seven straight seasons and eight of the last nine.

Pirates: Adam Frazier was batting .354 (29-for-82) with 11 doubles, four homers, 17 RBIs and a 1.034 OPS in 26 games since being recalled on July 25. His seventh home run of the season Sunday was his fourth in seven games against the Brewers dating to last September.

Angels: Albert Pujols passed Cap Anson for 23rd place all-time with his 3,082th career hit Sunday. His single in the sixth inning of a loss to the Astros broke an 0-for-17 slump.

Red Sox: Manager Alex Cora said he never reconsidered his plan to give slugger J.D. Martinez the day off before Monday’s scheduled open date. “We haven’t done two days off with him the whole season,” Cora said. “I think at this stage, two days will benefit him.”
