Weis Markets will start offering sameday grocery delivery in the Baltimore area next month through online service Shipt.

The membership-based delivery service for groceries and household items will start Sept. 6 at Weis stores in Baltimore and some metro areas in Delaware and Pennsylvania, offering access to almost 2.6 million households. Shipt also offers online deliveries from Target stores.

Customers can search an in-store assortment of products online, choose a one-hour delivery window and pay for their order through the Shipt app. Items are selected, bagged and delivered by a team of Shipt shoppers. Delivery is free on orders of more than $35.

Shipt plans to add more than 500 new store shoppers across Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania as part of the three-state Weis launch.

Sunbury, Pa.-based Weis opened its 52nd Maryland store in April in Nottingham in a former Kmart. Weis has been expanding in the Baltimore area over the past few years, partly by taking over former Mars Super Markets and Food Lion stores.
