Mount St. Mary’s lands Scott as graduate transfer

Mount St. Mary’s men’s basketball coach Dan Engelstad announced the addition of K.J. Scott (Omaha, Neb.) to the roster as a graduate transfer. Scott comes to the Mount after playing at Texas Southern the past two seasons. A preseason First Team All-SWAC selection, Scott averaged 12.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assist sand 1.3 steals in seven games last season before missing the remainder of the year with an injury. He scored in double figures in six of the seven games, including a season-high 19 points at Washington State. As a junior, Scott appeared in 35 games with 25 starts in helping lead Texas Southern to the NCAA Tournament. The Mountainee­rs will feature one of the youngest rosters in all of NCAA Division I with eighth freshmen and eight sophomores in addition to Scott. The Mount opens the 2018-19 season with a home exhibition game vs. Hood College on Nov. 1. The regular season begins at North Carolina State on Nov. 6. LOYOLA MARYLAND: The Greyhounds will open their sixth year in the Patriot League and the first under coach Tavaras Hardy on Jan. 3 when Holy Cross visits Reitz Arena for the conference opener. The Greyhounds will play an 18game Patriot League schedule followed by the 10team Patriot League Championsh­ips in early MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER: D.C. United goalkeeper David Ousted will be placed on the disabled list after undergoing nerve decompress­ion surgery on his left elbow. He is expected to miss six MLS matches. Ousted has made 17 MLS appearance­s (1,530 minutes), recorded 48 saves and posted four wins for D.C. United this season. COLLEGE TENNIS: Barrett Elkins was named coach of the Mount St. Mary’s men’s and women’s tennis programs. Former Mount St. Mary’s standout Brandon Wortkotter has also joined the staff as an assistant coach. WOMEN’S COLLEGE GOLF: Former Maryland golfer Emily Gimpel was named as assistant coach on Terps coach Diana Cantu’s staff. Gimpel played for Maryland from 2011 through 2014 and most recently on the profession­al level. COLLEGE SWIMMING: Johns Hopkins men’s and women’s coach Scott Armstrong announced the promotion of Nick Charriez to associate head coach and director of recruiting. Charriez is entering his fourth season with the Blue Jays. SPORTS MEDICINE: UMBC named Stacy Carone its associate director of athletics for sports medicine. Carone will coordinate the developmen­t and implementa­tion of all policies and procedures pertaining to UMBC student and student-athlete health and well-being. The native of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., just completed her second year at Rutgers, working with women’s basketball as the team’s primary athletic trainer. —

Former U.S. national team captain and Sounders striker Clint Dempsey announced his retirement, effective immediatel­y. Dempsey, 35, said he believes it’s the right time to call it quits after playing soccer profession­ally for 15 years. Dempsey is tied with Landon Donovan as the greatest U.S. goal scorer, scoring 57 internatio­nal goals in 141 appearance­s. ... The South American soccer confederat­ion is facing renewed criticism after its marquee Copa Libertador­es tournament was marred by fan violence and contradict­ory rulings. Tuesday’s match between Brazil’s Santos and Argentina’s Independie­nte had to be called off before the final whistle after angry local fans fought with police and threw fireworks onto the field.

Carlos Munoz will replace Robert Wickens in the final two IndyCar races of the season. Wickens has been hospitaliz­ed since his Aug. 19 accident at Pocono Raceway. ... Johnny Manziel is out of the CFL’s concussion protocol and is expected to back up Antonio Pipkin in the Alouettes’ game Friday in Ottawa. ... Mystics F Elena Delle Donne has a bone bruise in her left knee and is questionab­le for Game 3 of the WNBA semifinal series against the Dream. Delle Donne was hurt during the Mystics’ 78-75 loss Tuesday. The series is tied 1-1. ... Comedian Kevin Hart is among the investors in the new Profession­al Fighters League, a mixed martial arts promotion.
