PETA kills animals, too

- Will Coggin, Washington, D.C. The writer is research director at the Center for Consumer Freedom.

PETA is a little crabby about people eating crustaceans in Baltimore, and The Baltimore Sun’s editorial board is right to call out the animal rights group for challenging a Maryland tradition (“PETA finds a way to make Baltimore steam,” Aug. 27). Here’s something even more startling than the group's new billboard: While PETA loudly puts on these press stunts, it is quietly killing cats and dogs by the boatload at its headquarters.

According to animal custody records it has filed with Virginia, PETA has killed about 40,000 animals at is so-called “shelter” since 1998. According to records, last year it killed1,809 dogs and cats and only adopted out 44. The kill rate in some years is over 90 percent. Why would PETA do this? Because its president, Ingrid Newkirk, is on the record opposing pet ownership.

PETA is standing on a heap of dead furry animals and berating Marylanders for enjoying delicious crab. Only one side in this debate has something to be ashamed about.
