Criticism of PETA shelter is wrong

- Daphna Nachminovitch, Norfolk, Va. The writer is senior vice president for cruelty investigations for PETA.

Readers should be aware that letter writer Will Coggin is the opposite of an animal welfare advocate — he is a mouthpiece for a front group that represents Outback Steakhouse, KFC, factory farmers, and other enterprises that kill billions of animals every year (“PETA kills animals, too,” Aug. 29).

While these industries subject animals to miserable lives and violent, painful deaths so they can sell their flesh, PETA provides a painless end for suffering animals who have nowhere else to turn. We welcome all animals without fees or waiting lists, including dogs who have become aggressive from being chained 24/7 and are slowly dying from advanced heartworm disease, feral cats who are ravaged by injuries and illnesses, and animals whose guardians bring them to us because they can’t afford to pay for euthanasia at a veterinary clinic.

We’ve also helped thousands of impoverished families keep their beloved animal companions instead of giving them up by providing free veterinary care, food and other services. Last year alone, PETA helped more than 25,000 animals and spayed and neutered more than 13,300 at little to no cost to their guardians. We transfer adoptable animals to local shelters, and we’ve found loving homes for many ourselves.

I invite readers to visit www.PETASaves.com to learn more about our work.
