South River promotes Camper to baseball coach

-

South River athletic director Dave Klingel kept it in house when he had to replace baseball coach Ken Dunn after Dunn retired following a 2013 season that ended with a Class 4A state championship. Klingel is sticking with a successful formula, replacing Gary Gubbings, who stepped down at the end of July to spend more time with his family, with assistant coach Brian Camper. “We are extremely excited to have Brian Camper take over as our new varsity baseball coach,” Klingel said in a prepared statement. “Brian is a tremendous educator and coach who will maintain the high level of respect in the South River baseball program.” Gubbings served in the South River program the past 12 years after successful stints at Southern, which included multiple region championships, Broadneck and Anne Arundel Community College. He aided Dunn in the 2013 championship run and succeeded him upon retirement. He steps down after five seasons, including an 8-13 campaign last spring. Although Gubbings replaced Dunn on the diamond, it was Camper who replaced Dunn in the Edgewater school, taking over Dunn’s physical education position.
