Influentia­l Navy grad Huey dies at age 75

Dr. Calvin Huey, who was the first AfricanAme­rican football player at the Naval Academy, died last Saturday at 75. Huey was a 1967 graduate of the Naval Academy and earned two varsity letters on the football team as a wide receiver. He served two tours in Vietnam, serving as a pilot in the Marine Corps. Huey’s funeral will take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Annapolis (31 West Washington Street). There will be a memorial service at the Naval Academy on Friday at 2 or 3 p.m. LACROSSE: A limited number of tickets are available for the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, hosted by US Lacrosse on Sept. 29 at The Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley. Favored at 8-5 in the $45,000 second-level optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up, 5-year- old Florida- bred gelding Sheikh of Sheikhs ($5.20) ran 5½ furlongs in 1:03.62 over a firm turf course. MEN’S COLLEGE WATER POLO: For his efforts in the Navy Open, junior goalie Ronan Williams (Severna Park) was selected as the Naval Academy Athletics Associatio­n Athlete of the Week. —
