Towson senior Grant Kuehn is an attackman on the lacrosse team, but he’s listed as defender, midfielder and forward on the soccer team’s roster.

They can add goalie to the list of positions.

Although technically not in goal, Kuehn made a game-saving kick out with about 7 minutes left in the second overtime to preserve a 1-1 tie.

It happened after Sparrows Point’s John Hurget fed Logan Jacurak, who hit a ball that was tipped by diving keeper Caeden Fong as the ball spun toward the goal.

The Sparrows Point bench celebrated just as Kuehn came out of nowhere and cleared the ball before it crossed the line.

“It was about to go in,” said Kuehn, who estimated it was less than 2 yards. “My other center back lost his mark. So I ran in behind him and our goalie made a sliding save. And I just saw it dribbling into the goal, so I just laid out and just tried to scoop it on out of the goal.”

Kuehn was moved to left back when starting defender suffered a leg injury in the first overtime.

“Grant is our utility man,” Towson coach Randy Dase said. “Grant is a lacrosse player who plays soccer. He’s a very smart young man who has athletic ability so when our left back (Justin Groth) went down we moved him back to midfield and he plated a vital role.”

Kuehne knew after playing nearly 100 minutes in muggy conditions, he wasn’t going to watch the ball go in.

“I was just like, ‘I’m getting this ball out,’ ” he said. “I knew I was going to get it out. I was a little worried, but I just knew we played so long, so I’ve just got to sell out.”

They may not have gone into overtime if not for the first-half play of Sparrows Point goalie Justin Kuhn.

Kuhn came well off his line four times to break up or cause missed shots by the Generals (1-0-1).

Towson’s Nick Lewis had the first attempt and Rome Wainwright had the next three.

“He’s done really well this year,” said Sparrows Point coach Joe Lambert, whose defending Class 1A state championship team is 3-0-2 this season.

“The first half we could have had a few, but that is the nature of the game,” Dase said.
