The Sun wants more gubernatorial debates so how about open ones?

- David R. Griggs, Columbia The writer is the Libertarian Party’s candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Maryland’s 7th District.

In a recent editorial, “Who lost the debate? The voters” (Sept. 12), you rightfully criticize the Larry Hogan and Ben Jealous campaigns for agreeing to hold only one debate. But let mequote from your editorial: "All we can do is complain that democracy is being poorly served." Do you not think that not having all of the candidates for governor who are on November's ballot is also not serving democracy?

Why do you continue to support the major parties at the detriment of other viable candidates? Where is the editorial demanding that all candidates be invited to the debate? In the current political climate, I guarantee that there is significant dissatisfaction with the status quo, and allowing voters to hear from Libertarian Shawn Quinn and Green Party's Ian Schlakman would further the cause of democracy by informing voters of all the options they have for governor.

Is that not in the best interest of the citizens of our state? Do you no longer consider your newspaper unbiased?
