Will Lori investigate local crimes as well?

- Ann Bracken, Columbia

It is interesting to me that Pope Francis has chosen Archbishop William Lori to investigate a sexual abuse scandal in West Virginia (“Baltimore Archbishop Lori aims to bring ‘truth and justice’ to West Virginia Catholics rocked by scandal,” Sept. 15). While Archbishop Lori strikes the right tone with his promise to conduct a “fair and efficient investigation that leads to the truth,” I’d feel a lot better about his sincerity if he were willing to conduct an equally fair and efficient investigation into the abuses related to Joseph Maskell and the numerous men and women that suffered from his horrific abuse (“‘Keepers’ priest Maskell spent time in Ireland, now under scrutiny,” June 6).

The story of what happened at Keough High School is deeply personal for me because many of my good friends went to Keough, as did one of my sisters, and I had a cousin who entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame with Catherine Anne “Cathy” Cesnick, who disappeared in 1969. I think Archbishop Lori has plenty to answer for in Baltimore and owes the victims of Fr. Maskell and Sr. Cathy’s family some long-overdue honest answers that will finally lead to the truth that’s been hidden for over 50 years. The people of Maryland deserve his care and attention in solving these crimes.
