Austin ‘Mac’ Taliaferro, marketing director

Austin “Mac” Taliaferro, who retired as director of marketing and sales for the Hedwin Corp., died Sept. 15 from respiratory failure at Bayleigh Chase Assisted Living in Easton. The former Owings Mills resident was 86.

Austin McLanahan Taliaferro was the son of Francis Catesby Taliaferro, president and chairman of the board of the Savings Bank of Baltimore, and Jean Romaine McLanahan Taliaferro, a homemaker.

He was born in Baltimore and raised in Owings Mills at Stemmer House, a historic Georgian residence that dates to 1761. He attended the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., where he played football.

During the Korean War, he served in the Navy as a radioman aboard an oil tanker.

He retired in 1982 from Hedwin Corp., a Hampden maker of plastic containers, where he had been marketing and sales director. He moved to an Easton farm where he enjoyed waterfowl hunting and collecting decoys.

He volunteered at the annual Waterfowl Festival in Easton and at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels. He also coached Pop Warner football, and had donated his collection of Baltimore Colts memorabilia to the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards. Services are private. Mr. Taliaferro is survived by two sons, Scott M. Taliaferro of Roland Park and Alexander M. Taliaferro of Easton; two sisters, Brooke T. Wagner and Anne T. Whitridge, both of Stevenson; and four grandchildren. A marriage ended in divorce.
