Sparrows Point junior Stitt playing in First Tee tourney

Rhianna Stitt is one of 81 junior golfers selected to play in the 2018 PURE Insurance Championsh­ip Impacting The First Tee. The annual event, hosted by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, is being held through Sunday at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif., and will be televised internatio­nally on Golf Channel. The event teams junior golfers with PGA Tour Champions players and 162 amateurs during the tournament. The juniors, ages 14 to 18, compete for the pro-junior title. Representi­ng 22 states, the juniors were selected by a national panel of judges based on playing ability and applicatio­n values and life skills learned through The First Tee’s programs. Stitt is a junior at Sparrows Point and joined The First Tee of Greater Baltimore in 2009. Stitt started playing golf at the age of 5 and now has a handicap of 6.1. Stitt, a Dundalk resident, has won the Baltimore County High School golf championsh­ip the past two years. WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Mount St. Mary’s senior Kayla Hughes has been named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week. Hughes scored three goals in a pair of games to pace the Mountainee­rs offense last week. MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Sophomore Sam Brown redirected a cross from junior Davey Mason into the goal in the 85th minute to give Loyola Maryland a 1-0 win at Princeton Tuesday night. —
