Dr. Lynn Krista Rosenlof Hoelting, a retired surgeon and homemaker, died Sept. 23 of an intracranial hemorrhage related to a fall at her Cockeysville home. She was 56.

Born in Kearney, Neb., she was the daughter of Dr. Robert Rosenlof, a physician, and his wife, Jackie Hoss, a teacher.

She attended local public schools and was a pioneering female athlete in a Kearney boys baseball league. She was a standout basketball and volleyball player at Kearney High School, and a member of the 1978 Class A state championship volleyball team.

She obtained a degree in biological sciences at the University of Nebraska Lincoln and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She was a graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and was class vice president. She belonged to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

She performed a surgical residency at the University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville and was chief surgical resident. Her fellow residency students voted her top resident surgeon.

In 1989 she married Donald Joseph “Don” Hoelting at a ceremony in Omaha. She retired from medicine five years later.

The couple moved to Baltimore in 2002 and lived in Cockeysville where she raised her three children.

“She cherished her time raising us and volunteering at our schools,” said her daughter, Emily Hoelting of Chicago. “Her top priority was raising us and making sure we had the education and values we needed.”

Dr. Hoelting became a volunteer at the Loyola Blakefield Aquatic Club, where her children were members. She also volunteered with the Vanderbilt University women’s lacrosse team.

She was a cook and baker, and was known for her Christmas cookies. She returned to Kearney every year for the Christmas holidays and enjoyed spending a part of every summer with her family in Minnesota.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Montserrat Chapel at Loyola Blakefield, Chestnut Avenue in Towson.

In addition to her daughter, survivors include her husband, a partner in Investment Counselors of Maryland; a son, Zachary Hoelting of Annapolis; another daughter, Avery Hoelting of Nashville, Tenn.; two brothers, Eric Rosenlof of Mount Airy and Clark Rosenlof of Omaha, Neb.; and a sister, Lori Rosenlof Drake of Farmville, N.C.
