Kavanaugh-Ford reactions

Readers were split in their views about whom to believe in Thursday’s hearing on allegations against the Supreme Court nominee

What Democrats did is disgusting

I find what the Democrats have done concerning Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be disgusting (“A day of explosive testimony at Kavanaugh, Ford hearings results in a partisan brawl,” Sept. 28). They will do anything no matter how damaging to get their way and in the process have brought this Congress to a new low.

Deliberately waiting until the eleventh hour reeks of a sneaky ambush. So much harm has been done to the Kavanaughs and Christine Blasey Ford and her family by allowing unsupported and unproven allegations of sexual assault. These allegations should never have been brought forth when there is no proof or witnesses. The kind of harm inflicted by these kinds of unsupported accusations is devastating even to the innocent simply by their nature. It is unconscionable to try to destroy a man, his reputation and his family. Are we regressing to the Middle Ages when a person could be accused and punished based only on the word of the accuser? I used to be a registered Democrat; I would be ashamed to call myself one today.

This is a disgrace that has been brought about by a Congress that believes that American citizens fall into two categories: liberal or conservative. Wake up! The great majority of us are both; the issue at hand will dictate where we stand, not our voter registration cards. Some readers believed Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s denials of Christine Blasey Ford’s accusations. Others believed her.

But what evidence is there to support Judge Kavanaugh’s statement that he categorically denies all of the allegations?

First, he produced his calendar to show what his activities were for the month when the alleged attack took place and there was no entry that he had attended a party like the one she described.

Second, he testified that the witnesses named by Ms. Ford to the alleged affair had signed sworn statements under the penalty of a felony that they had no recollection of such an event or that the event never happened.

Third, he was correct that this entire event was orchestrated by the Democrats on the committee to delay the hearings until after the election and not to determine the truthfulness of the allegations.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein had Ms. Ford’s letter at the time Judge Kavanaugh visited her office, and she could have confronted him with the allegation without naming the accuser. Even you say that a full FBI investigation may never settle the the question. You were against his nomination not on whether he is eminently qualified but because the hearing was a farce. You would be against any nominee who did not espouse your political agenda.
