Maryland men upset No. 18 Coastal Carolina

The Maryland men’s soccer team earned a 3-1 win over No. 18 Coastal Carolina on Sunday. The visiting Terps (4-3-2, 2-1-0 Big Ten) outshot the Chanticlee­rs (4-3) 19-8 with 11 shots on goal. Maryland’s three goals all came in the second half, with William James Herve, Justin Gielen and Sebastian Elney scoring. The Terps opened the scoring in the 53rd minute. Andrew Samuels played sent a pass to Paul Bin down the right wing before the junior crossed to Herve, who scored from 10 yards out. Coastal tied the game just 30 seconds later. Gielen added the go-ahead goal in the 78th minute. Eric Matzelevic­h delivered cross to Gielen, who easily finished for the first goal of his career. Bin found Elney in the box two minutes last and the senior made it 3-0 with the first goal of his season. Maryland hosts No. 5 Michigan State on Friday at 7 p.m. WOMEN: Towson (3-10-1, 0-4 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) fell, 2-0, to host Elon (3-5-3, 1-2).
