Capitals’ Wilson faces scrutiny again after illegal hit
Washington forward Tom Wilson was assessed a match penalty after his shoulder appeared to collide with St. Louis Blues center Oskar Sundqvist’s head at center ice in the second period of the Capitals’ preseason finale, a 5-2 victory. Wilson now will be thrust back into the player-safety spotlight, just days before opening night Wednesday against the visiting Boston Bruins. Dating from the 2017-18 preseason, Wilson has been suspended three times in the past year, and the NHL’s Department of Player Safety is reviewing Sunday’s hit for possible supplemental discipline. The NHL first will analyze whether the head was the main point of contact on the hit, and a person familiar with the league’s thinking indicated the verdict on supplemental discipline will primarily hinge on that question. COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY: Maryland limited the nation’s top-ranked scoring offense to two goals and one penalty corner as the visiting No. 3 Terps earned a 4-2 victory over No. 2 Connecticut in a rematch of the 2017 NCAA championship game. Maryland (12-0), which is 8-0 against ranked teams this season, is one of just two remaining undefeated teams in the country, joining No. 1 North Carolina (11-0). Sophomore Bodil Keus tied her career high with two goals, both coming off penalty corners in the first 15 minutes. VARSITY BOYS SOCCER: No. 3 Loyola Blakefield earned a 6-0 win over Archbishop Spalding in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference play. The Dons scored five first-half goals led by two from Chase Llewellyn. Ben Gallagher, Dominic Caltabiano and Julian Schmugge also scored for Loyola. RUNNING: Josef Tessema of Castle Rock, Colo., finished in an event-record time of 4 minutes, 1.89 seconds to earn first place in the Elite Men category at the Navy Mile in Washington. Heather Kampf of Minneapolis, who was coming off multiple sacral stress fractures after winning the race in 2016, crossed the finish line first in the Elite Women with a time of 4:40.77. The fourth-annual Navy Mile consists of heats in which runners are grouped by age and ability from Elite and Paralympic to Sea Cadets and Family Fun Run/ Walk. The event is modeled after the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York and is the grand finale in the Bring Back the Mile Grand Prix Tour of 1-mile races nationwide. Participants ran the course on Pennsylvania Avenue NW by the U.S. Navy Memorial Plaza to 3rd Street NW and back, with the U.S. Capitol visible. MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER: Luciano Acosta had a goal and three assists, Wayne Rooney and Paul Arriola each scored two second-half goals, and D.C. United beat the Montreal Impact, 5-0, on Saturday night. United (10-11-8) closed within two points of the Impact (12-15-4) for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. D.C. has two games in hand. Bill Hamid had five saves for his second shutout of the season. —
