Don’t waste money on Lexington Market update

- Jerry Cothran, Baltimore

Pouring money into “revitalizing” Lexington Market is a waste of money (“New plan for market offered,” Oct. 4). While having a destination marketplace such as Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market is a great city destination and tourism benefit, the simple fact is the Lexington Market location can’t be fixed.

After moving to Baltimore, my wife and I went there once and were appalled at the location and surrounding neighborhood. It’s unsafe and downright scary. As your own article mentions, there’s a problem with drug dealing on the street and there’s an abundance of unsavory characters, liquor stores and, in general, clear signs of a neighborhood long neglected and decayed. I know it’s an “institution” but the best use of city dollars would be to recreate it in another more desirable (and safe) location.
