Coppin State plans ‘Midnight Mayhem’
Coppin State will introduce the women and men’s basketball teams as well as the other varsity rosters to the campus community Thursday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at “Midnight Mayhem: Champion Edition” in the PEC Arena. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Midnight Mayhem will tip off with a basketball alumni game that will be coached by former coachDerek Brown and former athletic director Dr. Mary Wanza. Eagles representing the 1997 basketball team that upset the University of South Carolina in the NCAA tournament will be on hand as well as several women who played on the Eagles’ first MEAC championship team in 1991. Coppin alum Jay Hill will emcee the event. Mayhem will also feature several entertainment performances from student groups. Third-year coach DeWayne Burroughs and the women’s team as well as second-year men’s coach Juan Dixon and his team will be introduced. The men’s team will play a brief intrasquad scrimmage. TIPOFF EVENTS: Bill Raftery, who was part of the broadcast team that called UMBC’s historic win over Virginia in the 2018 NCAA men’s tournament, will serve as the featured speaker at the Retrievers’ tipoff event Friday at the Bond Street Wharf in Fells Point. Raftery will be joined by New York Times best-selling author and UMBC basketball analyst John Feinstein, UMBC president Freeman Hrabowski and Retrievers basketball coach Ryan Odom as speakers for the third annual event. The 2018-19 defending America East champions will be introduced at the event, which is sold out. ... The UMES tipoff dinner will be held Saturday at William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Former Maryland coach Gary Williams will serve as guest speaker. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the program runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Cost is $75 per person or $500 for a table of eight. WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Maryland freshman Loren Sefcik was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Sefcik scored the winning goal in Maryland’s 2-1 upset of No. 14 Northwestern on Sunday. Her goal in the 34th minute was the first of her career, and clinched Maryland’s first win over a ranked team since 2014. MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: McDaniel scored a goal in the ninth minute and tacked on two secondhalf scores for a 3-0 win over Wilson. Joel Afata, Randy Hilleary and Liam Ireland scored for the Green Terror. MEN’S COLLEGE GOLF: McDaniel senior Shawn MacBurnie was named the Centennial Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week. MacBurnie led the Green Terror to a second-place finish at its own MasonDixon Collegiate Classic on Saturday and Sunday. He posted a 3-under par round of 69 on Sunday to finish the tournament with a 1-under score of 143 and win the individual title by a stroke. —
