Baltimore man sentenced to 10 years in fatal stabbing

A Baltimore man was sentenced last month to 10 years in prison for the stabbing death of Oscar Acevedo in 2017, according to the state’s attorney’s office and online records. James Arthur Chavis, 35, pleaded not guilty to first- degree murder and other charges, telling police in a taped confession that he stabbed Acevedo in self-defense. He was convicted by a jury of manslaught­er in June 2018. Chavis stabbed Acevedo outside a Royal Farms store at 2050 Fleet St. on Jan. 22 of last year. Acevedo, 24, of the 1400 block of E. Baltimore St., died at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
