Balto. Co.’s unfair tax on mobile homes must go
It is incredibly unfair that mobile home owners are taxed $20 per month (“Baltimore County considers eliminating monthly tax on mobile homes residents,” Oct. 15). It is also disingenuous that Keith Dorsey, Baltimore County’s budget director, is against eliminating the tax because of the loss of $600,000 to the county's revenue stream just because it has always been done. The director should be happy that the motion before the County Council does not require restitution of $600,000 per year of a tax that was unjustly assessed.
Consider this proposal to replace the $600,000 annual loss of revenue. The 2010 census reports 337,479 housing units in Baltimore County. The median value of those units is $248,700. A tiny .0007 percent increase in the property tax would replenish the $240 per year tax that mobile home owners pay over and above their property taxes.
As a home owner (non-mobile) myself, I would have no problem with such a minuscule increase.
