Criticism of white male college dean is racist

- Peggy Alley, Sparrows Point

A recent article in The Baltimore Sun revealed an example of discrimination. That article, "Dean's appointment sparks protests" (Oct. 14), implies that a "white man" cannot be an effective dean of the Gwen Ifill College of Media, Arts, and the Humanities at Simmons University even though he founded the African American studies program at Loyola University Maryland. Simmons President Helen Drinan even stated that the pool of candidates should be increased to ensure a woman of color would end up with the job.

To boycott events surrounding the opening of the Gwen Ifill College because Mr. Norman is a white man portrays a very racist and sexist attitude by the alumni and black students and should not be tolerated by the university.
