Regina A. Curran, homemaker, volunteer
Regina A. Curran, a homemaker and volunteer who was active in her church, died Friday from complications of dementia at a daughter’s home in Frankford, Del. The former Perry Hall resident was 92.
The former Regina Agnes O’Keefe was born in Baltimore and raised on Ensor Street. She was the daughter of Thomas A. O’Keefe Sr., a Baltimore City accounting clerk, and Lenore Wehage O’Keefe, a homemaker.
She was a 1944 graduate of the Institute of Notre Dame, where she played basketball, edited the school yearbook and was president of her senior class.
After her 1947 marriage to Thomas E. Curran Sr., a Bethlehem Steel Corp. accounting clerk in Sparrows Point, the couple settled in the Herring Run Park neighborhood.
They were members of the old St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at Valley and Eager streets, once an Irish-American enclave, and were involved with its 10th Ward Club.
Mrs. Curran had also been a member of the parents association of the Shrine of the Little Flower School.
They later moved to Perry Hall and became communicants of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fullerton, where Mrs. Curran attended daily Mass and said the rosary every evening.
“She inherited her mother’s special statue of the Blessed Mother where all special petitions were placed under her feet,” said a daughter, Carol Ann Curran of Frankford, Del.
Mrs. Curran participated in St. Joseph’s semi-annual chicken dinners, peeling potatoes and supervising the student waitstaff, her daughter said.
After her husband died in 1988, she volunteered at Mercy Medical Center, then at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. She worked in medical records and in the medical, surgical and cardiac care intensive care unit.
Her hobbies were reading, sewing, quilting and travel.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at her church, 8420 Belair Road, at 10 a.m. Saturday.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by two sons, Michael Curran of Middle River and Charles Curran of West Ocean City; another daughter, Peggy Curran of West Ocean City; a sister, Loretta Bull of Perry Hall; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Another son, Thomas E. Curran Jr., died in 2013.
