Capital Gazette public defender may be sidelined

The public defender representi­ng the Capital Gazette shooting suspect may step away from the case due to health concerns. Families of the shooting victims received an email Tuesday informing them of two postponeme­nts due to public defender Bill Davis’ health concerns, according to the email. Depending on the results of a forthcomin­g visit with a doctor, Davis might have to step away from the case. He is representi­ng the man accused of killing Gerald Fischman, Wendi Winters, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Rob Hiaasen on June 28. Jarrod Ramos, 38, of Laurel, has been charged with five counts of firstdegre­e murder and other related charges. The public defender’s office did not return a request for comment. The Anne Arundel County state’s attorney’s office declined to comment.
