By endorsing Hogan, The Sun betrays Baltimore

- Sarah Gannett, Baltimore

With its endorsement of Larry Hogan for governor, The Baltimore Sun has established itself as as the state’s newspaper, not Baltimore’s, and it has cemented its reputation for putting its business interests first (“Sun endorsement: Hogan for Maryland governor,” Oct. 24).

The endorsement’s nod to “reservations” about the administration’s failure and refusal to meaningfully address the needs of the urban poor and people (especially children) of color rings hollow in the wake of its lauding of Mr. Hogan’s “focus on business issues.” That nod rings even hollower given the editorial board’s apparent approval in this endorsement of the state’s response to the 2015 uprising. Does the board mean to reference the deployment of armed forces to the city? Because the state has had little other response to the uprising — certainly little response that has measurably improved the lives of those who rose in protest to Freddie Gray’s killing.

Maryland needs bold leadership that addresses the needs of all our citizens so that nobody is left out as the state moves forward. The Sun’s willingness to overlook this is a sad day for Baltimore and for the Fourth Estate.
