The Sun has failed Baltimore by backing Hogan’s re-election

- Henry Bethell, Baltimore

I am appalled at your decision to endorse Larry Hogan for governor (“Sun endorsement: Hogan for Maryland governor,” Oct. 24). As a Baltimore City Public School student, I have personally witnessed the harm of Governor Hogan’s administration. At my school, Baltimore City College, we have seen massive budget cuts, teachers laid off, all in a building with leaking and falling ceilings. A building without proper heating or air conditioning.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hogan has invested in voucher programs and claimed a $500 million surplus while a gap in public school funding remains. This endorsement sends a clear message to all students in public schools: We don’t care about you.

Secondly, I would like to condemn your publication for stating that Mr. Hogan has worked to “reform criminal justice.” His recent crime bill includes mandatory minimums and cruel sentencing guidelines. These policies have been proven to not work. Mr. Hogan cares more about mass incarceration than keeping Maryland safe. If he cared about keeping us safe, we would see investments in employment, transit and education (preventive solutions) that simply are not there.

The Sun’s editorial board should know better — and do better. Your endorsements have consequences for the people of Baltimore and you are failing us.
