Oakland Mills girls advance to 2A South, Section I semifinal
Catonsville boys edge Perry Hall, 1-0, in 4A North, Section I; Arundel boys roll
After three straight winless seasons, host Oakland Mills girls soccer earned its ninth victory of the 2018 campaign Friday night, 3-2, over Hammond to advance to the Class 2A South, Section I semifinals.
With the game tied late at 2 against No. 6 seed Hammond, Oakland Mills leading scorer Madison Greenberg got the gamewinning goal off a throw-in from fellow senior Kerry Brown, who jumped on Greenberg’s back after the finish.
An even bigger celebration would happen on the Scorpions’ sideline minutes later, as players from the girls and boys soccer programs formed a mosh pit to commemorate the playoff triumph.
“It’s a testament to my girls,” first-year coach Hassan Mostafa said. Oakland Mills (9-4) advances to play No. 2 seed Wilde Lake on Tuesday night.
“We know that we’re starting something big for the future,” Greenberg said.
GLENELG COUNTRY 1, ST. MARY’S 0: Ava Swartz scored the lone goal in the first half and the host Dragons (5-9) held on to beat the Saints (1-9-1) in an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference first-round game. Brianna Chun made seven saves for Glenelg.
Boys
CATONSVILLE 1, PERRY HALL 0: A stifling defense and the hustle of senior Ethan Clark were the difference as the host Comets (6-5-1) beat the Gators (6-7-1) in Class 4A North Section I.
It was the fifth straight shutout victory for Catonsville.
Clark scored the game’s only goal with 24:43 left in the first half when he outhustled a defender to a ball sent down the right sideline by Will Miller and drilled it off the far post into the goal. Thursday girls
NO. 1 MCDONOGH 5, ST. JOHN’S (D.C.) 2: The visiting Eagles completed the regular season with 12-0-1 and 7-0-1 records. The Cadets fell to 7-3-1.
Top-seeded McDonogh got a first-round bye and will face Glenelg Country in Tuesday’s Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference quarterfinal.
