17 regents oversee university system

They voted to retain UM coach and athletic director, retire president Loh

The University System of Maryland and its 12 campuses are governed by the Board of Regents, volunteers appointed by the governor.

In a surprise move early Wednesday night, University of Maryland President Wallace Loh fired football coach DJ Durkin a little more than 24 hours after the Board of Regents announced its decision to reinstate Durkin.

Loh also announced Tuesday that he will retire in June.

Public pressure on the regents had been building since its announceme­nt, and late Wednesday afternoon Gov. Larry Hogan called on the regents to reconsider the decision. Here are the regents: James T. Brady: Brady, the chair, has served on the board since 2015. He was secretary of Maryland’s Department of Business and Economic Developmen­t during the late 1990s. He was also the campaign chairman for Gov. Larry Hogan and served as co-chair of the Republican’s transition team. He was appointed to the board by Hogan.

Barry P. Gossett: Gossett, the vice chair, has served on the board since 2007. He is the retired CEO of Baltimore-based Acton Mobile Industries. Gossett, along with his wife, Mary, gave $10 million in 2007 to build the football team house that now bears their name. Gossett was appointed by former Gov. Martin O’Malley.

Gary L. Attman: Attman, the treasurer, has served on the board since 2009. He is the CEO of FutureCare Health and Management Corp., which he co-founded in 1985. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park. He was appointed by O’Malley.

Linda R. Gooden: Gooden, the assistant treasurer, has served on the board since 2009. She is the retired executive vice president of Lockheed Martin Informatio­n Systems & Global Services. She was appointed by O’Malley.

Michelle A. Gourdine: Gourdine, the secretary, has served on the board since 2015. She is a physician and health policy expert who serves as CEO of Michelle Gourdine & Associates. She is also the former Maryland deputy secretary of health for the state of Maryland. She was appointed by Hogan.

Robert D. Rauch: Rauch, the assistant secretary, has served on the board since 2013. A graduate of Maryland with a degree in engineerin­g, he served for six years as James Brady was secretary of Maryland’s Department of Business and Economic Developmen­t during the late 1990s and campaign chairman for Gov. Larry Hogan, who appointed him to the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland. director of public works and Talbot County engineer before moving to the private sector. Rauch was appointed by Hogan.

Joseph Bartenfeld­er: Bartenfeld­er was appointed to the board in 2014. Hogan named him as Maryland’s secretary of agricultur­e the year before. Bartenfeld­er has been a full-time farmer and smallbusin­ess manfor more than 35 years. Hogan appointed him.

Katrina J. Dennis, Esq.: Dennis was appointed to the board in 2017. She is a partner in the Baltimore office of the Saul Ewing LLP law firm. Hogan appointed Dennis.

Ellen Fish: Fish was appointed to the board in 2016. She is Hamilton Bank’s executive vice president and chief lending officer. She is a Hogan appointee.

James Holzapfel: Holzapfel was appointed to the board in 2016. He is the managing director of investment­s with the Holzapfel Investment Group of Wells Fargo Advisors. He graduated from Maryland in 1971. He is a Hogan appointee.

D’Ana Johnson: Johnson has served on the board since 2016. She has been a partner with the Bonner Kiernan Trebach & Crociata LLP law firm since 2002. She has practiced law for more than 40 years. Hogan appointed Johnson.

Robert Neall: Neall was appointed to the board in 2015 by Hogan. He is the Maryland health department secretary and a senior adviser to Hogan. Neall served as a member of the state Senate and in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1975 to 1987. He was Anne Arundel County executive from 1990 to 1994.

Robert Pevenstein: Pevenstein was appointed to the board in 2015 by Hogan and previously served from 2003 to 2008. He was a chief financial officer for 20 years, concluding at UNC, formerly United Nuclear Corp., an aviation services and manufactur­ing company. He is a College Park graduate.

Louis Pope: Pope has served on the board since 2016. He is the president of Century 21 Trademark Realty Inc., a real estate company. He is an alumnus, as well as a former vice chairman of the Republican National Committee and chairman of the Maryland Republican Party. Hogan ap- pointed Pope.

Robert Wallace: Wallace has been on the board since July 2018. He is a member of the Greater Baltimore Committee board and Maryland Economic Developmen­t Commission. He is currently chair of The President’s Roundtable, an organizati­on made up of regional CEOs of black-owned companies. Wallace was appointed by Hogan.

William Wood: Wood has served on the board since February 2018, but served previously. He is the founding president of the University of Maryland College Park Alumni Associatio­n. An alumnus, he has been a lawyer for over 40 years. Wood is the former president of the Maryland Trial Lawyers Associatio­n. Hogan appointed Wood.

Langston O. Frazier: Frazier is the student member of the board. He a senior at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, where he is pursuing a degree in PGA Golf Management with an emphasis in hospitalit­y and tourism management.
