Terps capture Big Ten field hockey tournament crown

First-seeded Maryland defeated No. 6-seed Iowa, 2-1, in the Big Ten field hockey tournament championsh­ip game in Evanston, Ill., on Sunday. With the victory, Maryland (19-2, 7-1 Big Ten) earned the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament, and secured its second Big Ten tournament title. Madison Maguire scored the first goal for the Terps in the sixth minute before Bibi Donraadt made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute. Maryland’s Linnea Gonzales (Patterson Mill) earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors. The Terps received the No. 2 seed in the NCAAtourna­ment and will host Albany in the first round Friday. MORE COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY: Johns Hopkins beat host and top-seeded Franklin & Marshall, 3-1, in a shootout to win the program’s first Centennial Conference championsh­ip since 2003. The teams were tied 0-0 through 70 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime. MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Sophomore Eric Matzelevic­h scored in overtime to lift fifthseede­d Maryland past fourth-seeded Michigan State, 1-0, in the Big Ten quarterfin­als in East Lansing, Mich. After the Terps (8-6-3, 4-4 Big Ten) thwarted a few good Michigan State chances early in overtime, Matzelevic­h tapped in a rebound from close range in the 98th minute to end it. Maryland will face top-seeded Indiana in the Big Ten semifinals Friday in Westfield, Ind., at 1 p.m., and the match will be shown live on Big Ten Network. WOMEN’SCOLLEGESO­CCER: Host Johns Hopkins (17-2) fell to Swarthmore, 5-1, in the Centennial Conference tournament championsh­ip. The Blue Jays’ seeding and opponent in the NCAA tournament will be announced today at 1:30 pm. WOMEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Secondseed­ed Johns Hopkins (21-7) won its third consecutiv­e Centennial Conference title as the Blue Jays swept fourth-seeded McDaniel (21-8) in three sets at Franklin & Marshall College. —
