Gladiators roll to state final for first time since 2014

The Glenelg girls volleyball team handled Hereford with ease and rolled to a 3-0 victory over the Bulls in a Class 2A state semifinal at the University of Maryland’s Ritchie Coliseum on Tuesday night.

The No. 2 Gladiators (17-1) won, 25-15, 25-14, 25-13, to advance to the state final for the first time since 2014 and 10th time overall. They will play Williamspo­rt, which beat Rising Sun in the other semifinal, on Monday for a chance to win their first state championsh­ip since 2005 and fifth in school history.

Glenelg used a pair of 9-0 runs in the first set to pull away. Tied at 14, the Gladiators won 11 of the final 12 points to win the set, and the momentum carried into the second.

An early 7-1 run put them in front 7-3, and they pulled away thanks to the offensive firepower of Maddie Myers and Gracen Alsheimer. Myers had five kills and Alsheimer had four in the stanza, and senior setter Maddie Southern helped close out the 25-14 set victory with a kill and three straight aces.

The rout was on in the third set. Glenelg won13 of the first 14 points behind six total kills and an ace and never looked back.
