Man killed after being hit by car in Arundel is identified

Anne Arundel County police have identified the man who died Saturday after being struck by a car in Riviera Beach. Police said Michael Ireland, 43, of Annapolis died after he was struck by a vehicle while walking on Fort Smallwood Road in the early morning hours Saturday. Firefighte­rs found Ireland after he had been struck by a two-door 2007 Volkswagen sedan driven by Devon Stoddard Menza, 18, of Pasadena. Ireland was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigat­ors believe he was walking into oncoming traffic on Fort Smallwood Road. Nochargesh­avebeenfil­ed. “Theprelimi­nary cause of the crash is the pedestrian failing to yield to roadway traffic and walk on the available shoulder,” a police spokesman said.
