Salisbury men win 9th in row to open hoops season

The Salisbury men’s basketball team picked up a 91-89 overtime victory against Wesley (4-5) to secure the best start in program history, winning its ninth straight game to open the year. Johnny Fierstein hit a layup to cut Wesley’s lead to one with 40 seconds left in regulation, then connected on a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left to tie the game at 80, forcing overtime. In the extra session, the lead changed four times, with the final one going in Salisbury’s direction when Gary Briddell was left wide open in the left corner and hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play. Briddell and Fierstein each finished with 18 and seven rebounds while Mike Ward scored 17 and Lucas Martin had 10 points and five rebounds.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Rachel Ryan recorded her first double double of the season, scoring 17 points and pulling down 12 rebounds, and Kaylyn French led all scorers with 19 points to lift visiting Salisbury (7-2) to a 64-47 win over Wesley (1-6).

NHL: The Washington Capitals reassigned forward Riley Barber to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.
