Dresser will be missed

After reading Mike Dresser’s farewell comments, “Dresser’s Annapolis” (Dec. 5), I was reminded of how clearly and incisively he wrote over 21 years for The Baltimore Sun. When he left the State House beat for seven years beginning in 2004, I marveled at how his concise, observant writing style enlivened reporting of oft-dry transportation subjects. At one point, if I recall correctly, he wrote about remote roads throughout Maryland — akin, on a much smaller and more modest scale, to Charles Kuralt’s “America.”

Mr. Dresser’s final “editorial notebook” also struck a sensitive nerve for me. His departure from the State House press corps removes an experienced, hard-nosed commentator from coverage of state government. As most would concede, this journalistic oversight is vital — imperative, actually — for our sometimes-wobbly democracy. I feel confident that The Sun will continue its traditionally strong and fair coverage of the Maryland State House and executive agencies. The public reaps the benefits.
