Glen Burnie stymies Severna Park

Gophers earn 50-41 boys basketball victory; Milford Mill boys fall to Gerstell

For a pair of teams coming off double-digit losses in their season openers, Tuesday couldn’t have come soon enough for the Glen Burnie and Severna Park boys basketball teams.

In a game that was tight throughout with neither team pulling away to take control, the Gophers evened their record with a 50-41 victory over the Falcons.

Glen Burnie (1-1) took the lead for good with a14-0run in the first half, but the Falcons refused to go away and kept the game close the entire second half.

“I’m very happy with how much we improved defensivel­y,” said Glen Burnie coach Mike Rudd, whose team gave up 89 points to Old Mill on Friday. “We did not play defense well at all Friday night.”

Severna Park (0-2) led for most of the first quarter on the strength of seven early points from Jordan Hallet, but the Gophers used a 14-0 run over a six-minute span of the first half that turned a three-point deficit into an 11-point lead. Four players scored during the run, including six points from Mekhi Simmons. Dominick Williams hit a pair of free throws three minutes into the second quarter to cap the run and gave the Gophers their biggest lead of the game.

The Falcons managed to hang around, but Williams hit an off-balance 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer that gave the Gophers a 10-point lead at the half. Williams finished with three 3-pointers and led the Gophers with 12 points.

Hallet, who led all scorers with 17 points, was forced to sit whenhepick­ed uphis fourth foul three minutes into the second half with Severna Park down by nine. The Falcons cut into the lead and pulled to within one late in the quarter on an offensive rebound and layup from Orion Young before Williams put the Gophers up by four heading to the fourth.

GERSTELLAC­ADEMY55, NO. 11MILFORD MILL 42: Anthony Carpenter scored a game-high 18 points and Ahmad Harrison had 13 points to lead the host Falcons (4-4) in an upset win over the Millers (1-1). Gerstell opened with an 18-9 run in the first quarter. Jermaine Godwyn had 15 points for Milford Mill.

EDMONDSON 71, NEW ERA 42: Keith Bolden scored 12 points to lead the visiting Red Storm (3-0) past the Jaguars (0-3).

Wrestling

CATONSVILL­E WINS: Lansdowne’s wrestling team went 27-1 in dual meets the past two years, and in each of those years, they’ve captured the Catonsvill­e Cup, which features a tri-meet between host Catonsvill­e, Lansdowne and Woodlawn.

The trio got together again Tuesday evening and the Comets stole the spotlight.

Lansdowne (2-1) opened the matches with a 48-36 victory over Woodlawn, but Catonsvill­e (3-0) handed the Vikings a 45-27 loss in the second match and the Comets clinched the Cup with a 52-25 victory over Woodlawn in the final match.

Against Woodlawn, the Vikings enjoyed pins from Jacob Lipscomb (138 pounds, 3:32), Altaf Meraj (182, :43), Brandon Ngyuyen (220, :22), Brian Ngyuyen (285, 2:22), Riley Bozeman (113, 1:00) and Lai Tha (120, 1:16) and forfeit wins from Peyton Collins (145) and Idriss Zalina (132).

Woodlawn earned pins from Matt Lewis (152, 3:18), Joel Turner-Rodgers (160, : 38), Thierno Cherie (170, 2:57) and Antonio DeShields (195, :49).

In the match against the hosts, the Vikings fell behind 33-3.

OAKLAND MILLS WINS: Oakland Mills took down Howard County rival River Hill and Long Reach to sweep a tri-meet in Columbia.

The Scorpions won eight of their 14 bouts against the Hawks and each came via fall in a 48-30 victory to avenge a one-point defeat last season. They rolled past the Lightning, 54-21, in the final match of the night. River Hill beat Long Reach, 51-27, to finish the meet1-1.

The highlight match of the night featured Catonsvill­e’s Tye Perry winning an 18-16 decision over Peyton Collins.
