Timothy Ellis Pierce, a retired scientific supplies manager who was active in church and schools, died of cancer Nov. 29 at the Blakehurst Retirement Community. The former Homeland Mews resident was 77.

Born in York, Pa., he was the son of E. Everett Pierce Jr., a salesman, and his wife, Margaret Ellis, a homemaker and volunteer. He was a 1959 graduate of the George School in Newtown, Pa. and earned a bachelor’s degree at Kenyon College, where he was on the swimming team. He received a doctorate in nuclear chemistry from the University of Rochester.

He spent 30 years in Japan managing the distributi­on of scientific and medical equipment throughout Asia. He directed the Asian business for Life Technologi­es, based in Rockville. He retired in 2002.

While overseas, he was a Cubmaster and Scoutmaste­r for the Tokyo American Club. He served on the board of governors for the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan and also wrote reports about business conditions there, He was a vestryman at St. Alban’s Church in Tokyo.

After his retirement he settled in Home- land Mews and had been vice president of its neighborho­od associatio­n.

He was a member of the Baltimore Kawasaki Sister City Committee. He volunteere­d as a firstand second-grade tutor at Roland Park Elementary Middle School, Calvin Rodwell Elementary School and Govans Elementary School, where he was named Volunteer of the Year for 2018. He also served as a judge for both National History Day and the Science Fair at the Roland Park school.

“He was interested in helping kids learn the basic math facts,” said his wife, the former Barbara Lee Smith.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 22 at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 5600 N. Charles St., where he served on the vestry and was the church treasurer and an usher.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, a biology and bioethics professor at the University of Maryland University College; a son, Thomas L. Pierce of Rochester, N.Y.; a brother, E.E. “Turk” Pierce of York, Pa.; and four grandchild­ren. A son, Robert L. Pierce, died in 2012.
