Led by Jack­son, UMBC edges Maine, 67-66

KJ Jack­son scored 22 points as vis­it­ing UMBC held on to de­feat Maine, 67-66, in the Amer­ica East Con­fer­ence on Sun­day. The Black Bears’ Den­nis Ash­ley hit a 3-pointer with five sec­onds left to nar­row Maine’s deficit to 67-64. A steal and layup by Vin­cent Eze cut the lead to a point with 1.4 sec­onds re­main­ing, but the Re­triev­ers were able to in­bound the ball to end the game. Joe Sher­burne added 21 points and nine re­bounds for UMBC (15-10, 7-3), and Ricky Coun­cil II had 14 points. R.J. Ey­tle-Rock added six re­bounds. Isa­iah White had 17 points and seven re­bounds for the Black Bears (5-20, 3-7). An­drew Flem­ing added 15 points and eight re­bounds. Ser­gio El Dar­wich had 11 points and 10 as­sists. The Re­triev­ers have won six of their past seven games and three straight on the road in league play. UMBC dressed only 10 play­ers, as ju­nior post player Sam Sch­wi­etz (an­kle) joined the list of in­jured big men, which now to­tals five. Two of those play­ers not in uni­form — sopho­mores Dan Akin and Bran­don Hor­vath (South­ern) com­bined for 25 points and eight re­bounds in UMBC’s 61-52 win over Maine on Jan. 5. The Re­triev­ers will play Bing­ham­ton on the road Wed­nes­day night.
