Ward breaks hand in Spartans victory

-

Kenny Goins had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 11 Michigan State finished the game with a 20-2 run, beating Ohio State 6244 on Sunday in East Lansing, Mich.

Matt McQuaid scored 14 points for the Spartans and Cassius Winston added 13.

Michigan State (21-5, 12-3) pulled into a firstplace tie with rival Michigan atop the Big Ten, holding Ohio State to 13 points in the second half.

The Buckeyes (16-9, 6-8) led by six at the break but shot 4 of 21 from the field the rest of the way.

It was tied at 42 when Michigan State’s Kyle Ahrens sank a 3-pointer that started a 10-0 run.

The Spartans won despite big man Nick Ward hardly playing in the second half because he broke his left hand. The team hopes Ward’s hairline fracture can heal well enough for him to return to play this season.

Villanova blows big lead: LJ Figueroa scored 22 points and St. John’s rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half to stun No. 13 Villanova 71-65 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Red Storm (19-7, 7-6 Big East) were down 48-34 with 12:30 left. St. John’s scored 20 of the next 25 points to take its first lead on Figueroa’s 3-pointer from the corner.

The teams traded the lead over the next few minutes before Figueroa hit another 3 that gave the Red Storm a 58-57 advantage with 3:12 left that started an 8-0 run.

Joe Cremo scored 14 points for Villanova (20-6, 11-2).

Young scores 55: Quinnipiac guard Cameron Young scored 55 points during his school’s 107-100 triple-overtime victory over host Siena, the most points scored by a Division I player in more than 10 years.

Young, a graduate student, added 10 rebounds to become the first Division I player in the last 20 seasons with 55 points and 10 rebounds in a game.

Young was 16-for-20 from the free-throw line and made 9 of 13 3s.

Siena’s Jalen Pickett scored 46 points in the loss.
