Patterson Mill girls repeat in 2A lacrosse

Glenelg boys down Century to reign as Class 2A champs

-

It was just a matter of minutes into Tuesday’s Class 1A girls state championship lacrosse game that Patterson Mill was going to win its second straight state title.

The Huskies (11-6) scored the first nine goals over a 15-minute stretch and cruised past Loch Raven (6-11), 20-5, at Paint Branch High School.

Sophomore Anna Salerno scored the first of the nine goals and finished with a game-high five goals and two assists.

Salerno scored four of the first nine and senior Beth Bruck scored two. Delaney Madsen, Lindsey Tolliver and Sydney Beck added a goal each.

“After awhile, they were playing a zone defense, so we just realized that if we cut, we’d be open, a lot, ad so we realized that and I feel like that really helped,” Salerno said.

The draw control was big early and the Huskies had a 17-10 advantage by game’s end. “I just think that it was really important that we had draw after every single possession, because when we got the draw on offense, they weren’t scoring, obviously,” Bruck said.

The Cougars were held hitless into the sixth inning. Andrew Noyes changed that with a single leading off the inning. Jake Bogdan drew a walk an out later and Chris Emmfollowed with a liner to right to drive in pinch runner Ben Armstrong with the Cougars’ lone run.

La Plata 1, Hereford 0: La Plata pitchers Dean Kirby and Ryan Calvert blanked Hereford on five hits as the Warriors (19-5) defeated the Bulls (13-8) in the Class 2A state semifinal at Montgomery Blair High.

Hereford pitcher Aaron Winsker yielded one unearned run and six hits in six innings and Connor Mann had two hits for the Bulls.

Alex Borges doubled leading off the bottom of the fifth and pinch runner Jake Gleason scored with two outs when Kirby reached on an error.

Kirby pitched five innings and Calvert retired the final six batters for the save. No. 2 Chesapeake-AA 5, Linganore 0: For the first time since 2012, Chesapeake (19-3) is making a return trip to the state championship game.

Charli Smith delivered a pair of RBI singles, Kendall Thomas added a base hit that drove in the only run the Cougars really needed an Kexin Wang stroked a line-drive solo home run to give the Cougars a 5-0 win over Linganore from Frederick County in the Class 3A state semifinals at Bachman Sports Complex on Tuesday night.

Haley Downin allowed six hits and no walks while fanning eight in the completegame shutout.

La Plata 6, No. 13 Eastern Tech 3: The Mavericks (16-3) surrendered a five-run fourth inning to defending champion Warriors (18-4) in a Class 2A state semifinal loss at Bachman Sports Complex in Glen Burnie.

Eastern Tech had its 13-game win streak halted. La Plata from Charles County, who beat them 3-2 in last year’s title game, advance to Saturday’s championship game versus Queen Anne’s, a 9-0 winner over Middltown.

For a second straight year, La Plata pitcher Ava Krahling had the answers to end the Mavericks season.

She kept the Mavericks bats quiet through five innings, while the Warriors put together a five-hit, five-run fourth for a 6-0 lead. Sydney Bales’ two-run home run to center was the highlight.

The Mavericks scored three in the sixth — Kristin Toland and Abigail Heagy producing run-scoring singles — but it wasn’t enough.

After cutting the Mavericks cut the lead to 6-3, Krahling got them in order in the seventh. She allowed four hits in the sixth inning and only one more in the other six with eight strikeouts.

“We faced this pitcher the last couple times we’ve played them, so we just tried to figure it out and we showed a lot of heart,” Eastern Tech coach Jack Meyers said.

“That kind of pitcher you don’t see in [Baltimore] county, but that’s Ok and it’s no excuse. They have a great team over there – lights out. We put the ball in play and we were happy with the rally late in the game, but just came up short.”

Sparrows Point 5, Lackey 4: As time goes on, teams begin to come together for one for one common goal — a state championship. That camaraderie was apparent for Sparrows Point softball on Tuesday in the 1A state semifinals, with the Pointers prevailing in a back-and-forth contest for a victory.

Sparrows Point (11-10) has had an uphill battle to climb all season, featuring just three seniors on the roster and holding a record under .500 heading into the state playoffs. However, now the team will take on Bohemia Manor (21-1) on Saturday at the University of Maryland Softball Complex at 2:30 p.m. with a chance for the program’s first state championship.
