The reigning NL MVP was set to bat third and play right field when the Brewers hosted the Twins. Yelich leads the NL with a .335 batting average and his 39 home runs are tied for the most in the majors with the Angels’ Mike Trout. Former major league pitcher Curt Schilling said he’s thinking about running for Congress in Arizona. Schilling confirmed in an email to The Arizona Republic on Monday that he’s considering a run. He declined to say which district he’d run in and wrote that “the illegal immigration issue is not a joke.” Schilling, 52, helped the Diamondbacks to its only World Series championship in 2001. During his start against the Indians, LHP Chris Sale reached 2,000 career strikeouts faster than any pitcher in history. He struck out the side in the first and reached the milestone in the third when he fanned rookie Oscar Mercado. Sale broke Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez’s mark by getting to 2,000 in 1,626 innings. Martinez did it in 1,711 innings. Brewers: ■ NATIONAL LEAGUE 2019 2019 VS. OPP. Zack Greinke allowed two runs over six innings in winning for the second time since being acquired from the Diamondbacks in a 6-2 win over the White Sox in Game 1 of a doubleheader. A person familiar with the deal says RHP Greg Holland agreed in principle on a minorleague contract. Holland, 33, was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks last week. Holland is a three-time All-Star who led the NL in saves in 2017 with 41 for the Rockies. Rookie OF Austin Riley will not need surgery on his injured right knee and expects to return to the lineup in about two weeks. But SS Dansby Swanson continues to rehab a bruised right foot that already has kept him out far longer than the team expected. He’s still not sure when he’ll be able to return. RHP Sam Dyson was activated from the injured list and RHP Cody Stashak was optioned to Triple-A Rochester. Dyson, who was acquired from the Giants at the trade deadline, had missed the last nine games with right biceps tendinitis. Veteran C Chris Iannetta was designated for assignment. He departs as the team’s alltime leader among catchers in games played, runs, hits, homers, RBIs and walks. The 36-year-old hit .222 with six homers in 52 games this season.
