Good, bad news for ailing Chiefs

Mahomes OK, Hill nears return, but injuries piling up

-

The Chiefs could get star wide receiver Tyreek Hill back for Sunday’s game against the Texans, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes avoided any serious injury to his ankle, though that may be about the end of their positive news on the injury front.

The Chiefs placed defensive tackle Xavier Williams on IR on Wednesday after he sustained a high ankle sprain in last weekend’s 19-13 loss to the Colts.

Left tackle Eric Fisher remains sidelined after core muscle surgery. Defensive tackle Chris Jones, receiver Sammy Watkins and offensive lineman Andrew Wylie all missed practice after they were hurt against the Colts, and their status for this weekend is murky at best.

Mahomes, meanwhile, was stepped on by left tackle Cameron Erving while planting to throw from his end zone Sunday. The reigning league MVP limped to the sideline when the Chiefs were forced to punt in a scene similar to that of Week 1, when Mahomes hurt his ankle against the Jaguars.

“It was sore after the game, but it was really feeling pretty good today,” Mahomes said, “... I feel like I’ll be able to move around enough to win.”

It will help to get Hill back on the field.

The two-time All-Pro broke his collarbone when he was driven into the sideline by the Jaguars, and only began to practice last week.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid didn’t say when Hill will play.

Patriots 31, Giants 17

Pouncey’s season over: Chargers coach Anthony Lynn announced that four-time Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey will undergo neck surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Lynn said he doesn’t know if the injury will end Pouncey’s career. Pouncey, 30, suffered the neck injury during last weekend’s loss to the Broncos.

Ramsey practices: Jaguars two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey practiced for the first time in three weeks, rejoining teammates two days after seeing a back specialist.

Ramsey participated in a limited capacity, taking part in individual drills before spending the rest of the session working with team trainers on the side.

It remains to be seen whether Ramsey plays Sunday against the Saints and the league’s leading receiver, Michael Thomas.

Ramsey missed seven consecutive practices because of illness, back tightness and the birth of his second daughter. His back caused him to miss the last two games.

Burfict ban upheld: Raiders linebacker Vontaze Burfict’s appeal to overturn his suspension for the rest of the season for a helmet-to-helmet hit in Week 4 was denied.
