Tre Jones scored 15 points and Cassius Stanley added 11 of his 13 points in the second half to help No. 4 Duke beat No. 3 Kansas 68-66 in the opener of the Champions Classic on Tuesday night in New York.

Trailing 61-60 with 2:29 left, Stanley drove to the basket and made the layup and was fouled. The freshman guard converted the FT to give the Blue Devils a one-point lead.

Devon Dotson missed a layup on the other end and Jones then hit a jumper that bounced off the rim twice before dropping in with 1:33 left.

Junior G Brandon Robinson will miss No. 9 UNC’s season opener against Notre Dame on Thursday due to a sprained ankle. There’s no timetable yet for his return. ... Cade Cunningham, ESPN’s No. 2 overall prospect in the Class of 2020, announced his commitment to Oklahoma State. The Cowboys hired Cunningham’s brother, Cannen, in June. A 6-foot-7 point guard from Texas who attends Montverde Academy (Fla.), Cade Cunningham is the projected No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

College football: Undefeated Minnesota, ranked No. 17 in the first CFP rankings, signed coach P.J. Fleck to a contract extension through the 2026 season. The contract, pending final approval by the Board of Regents, will pay Fleck $4.6 million ’20 with a $50,000 raise for each season thereafter. His prior deal had him making $3.6 million this year. The original contract also called for a $1 million payment to Minnesota per remaining season on the deal if Fleck were to skip out, but now it would cost him $10 million to do so anytime before Dec. 31, ’20. The Gophers are 8-0 for the first time since winning the national championsh­ip in 1941. ... New Mexico DL Nahje Flowers died. He was 21. No cause of death was given.

Soccer: Chelsea rallied from three goals down to secure a 4-4 draw with visiting Ajax in Champions League group play. Jorginho had two goals and Cesar Azpilicuet­a and Reece James also scored for the Group H leaders.
